Hornbill Festival

 The Hornbill Festival takes place at Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, about 12 km from Kohima. All Nagaland tribes participate in this festival. The festival aims to revive and protect the rich culture of Nagaland and showcase its ingenuity and traditions. There is an annual Jamboree Hornbill Festival which runs every year for 10 days through Nagaland. Located in Kisma Heritage Village on the outskirts of Kohima, it brings together the cultural diversity of Nagaland tribes. The festival welcomes around 16 Nagaland tribes with thousands of visitors, who come to witness a great tribal spectacle, which unfolds in an attractive variety of activities.


The festival is named after the Indian hornbill, a large and colorful forest bird depicted in the folklore of most tribes in the state. The week-long festival brings everyone together in Nagaland and people enjoy colorful performances, crafts, games, food fairs, games and celebrations. Traditional arts including painting, wood carving, and sculpture are also on display.


Festival highlights include traditional Naga Morang arts and crafts, food stalls, medicinal herb stalls, flower shows and sales, cultural mixtures: songs and dances, fashion shows, beauty contests. , Traditional archery, Naga fighting, indigenous sports and music festivals. The Hornbill Festival presents a colorful mix of dances, performances, crafts, parades, games, sports, food fairs, and religious ceremonies. 


An ideal balance between art, history, and culture, there are exceptionally beautiful objects in exaggeration that reflect the history of tribes. Performances that complement them are works of art in motion. While wars may have occurred in ancient times, they have been reimagined as mock fight dramas and drawn large crowds. Along with the war log drum, the blazing shotgun, the Beveled Swords (DAA), Dow and Spears, the star performing in full-blown mock battles, dressed in warrior costumes. The size, pattern, and carving of traditional Naga weapons varies from tribe to tribe. Most of the performances are accompanied by live music and rhythmic warfare.


Organized by the Government of Nagaland to promote cultural heritage and inter-tribal interaction, the Hornbill Festival is the best way to experience the rich culture of the state. Some of the highlights of the festival are traditional Naga Morang exhibitions, flower shows, medicinal herb stalls, fashion shows, Naga wrestling, indigenous sports and concerts among others.
