Guru Rabindranath Jayanti 2020:

Rabindra Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore,  the great Bengali poet, scholar, novelist, playwright, humanist, philosopher and Nobel laureate. This day is celebrated in May, the 25th of the Bengali calendar month: Boishakh.

A brief introduction to the life of Rabindranath Tagore:


Born into a wealthy Bengali family, Rabindranath Tagore is known for his contributions in the field of Bengali literature and politics. His poems, stories, songs (known as Rabindra Sangeet), plays and novels are still revered and analyzed in various fields of art. He was the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize (1913) for his contribution to world literature.

Rabindranath Tagore wrote the famous national anthem of India "Jana Gana Mana". He also wrote the national anthem for Bangladesh. His other notable works include Gitanjali, Post Master, Kabuliwala, Nastnirah, to name a few. His songs such as Maje Tobo, Akash Bhar, Amar Hiyar Meje, Puran Sei Dinkar Kotha and Meagher Koyal, are still performed by notable singers from Bengal and India.

Acclaimed filmmaker and Academy Award winner Satyajit Ray made some notable films based on Tagore's short stories and novels. Tagore also established the famous Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, West Bengal. Rabindranath Tagore never believed in teaching in the classroom. Therefore, he offered the idea that classes are taught in the midst of nature, a practice that is still followed by the university and its students.


Celebration of Ravindra Jayanti across India:


Guru Rabindranath's birthday is formally celebrated around the world by Bengalis by placing various cultural events in his memory. Theater plays, dance plays, poetry and songs, all written and composed by the legend itself, are performed to various institutions and theaters on this day.

In Kolkata, the festival is celebrated as Poncheshe Boishakh and all cultural activities take place at Jorasanko Thakurbari (Tagore's ancestral home) and Ravindra Sadan (cultural center). Santiniketan in Birbhum in West Bengal also organizes large celebrations to celebrate the birthday of its founder.

Works of Rabindranath Tagore:


Drama:

Rabindranath Tagore started writing plays when he was only sixteen. His brother Jyotirendranath was with him. The first play, Valmiki Pratibha, was written when he was 20 years old. Visarjan, which was written in 1890, is one of the best plays. Other plays include Chitrangada, Shyama, Chandalika etc.

Short stories:

 He began writing short stories at the age of 16. The first short story was released in 1877. He wrote several short stories between 1891 and 1895. This four-year period is recognized as the "Sadhana" period of Rabindranath Tagore. Famous short stories written by him include Kabuliwala, Chudita Pasan, Atithi, etc.

Novel: 

Without a doubt, he was a great novelist.Tagore's famous compositions include Char Odhay, Chaturanga, Naukadubi and Shushar Kobita. Ghare Bayer reprimanded for intensifying terrorism and religious sentiment in the Swadeshi movement. On the other hand, Gora raises controversial questions about the Indian personality.
