When is Ambedkar Jayanti?


Ambedkar Jayanti is a regional holiday which is always celebrated on 14 April.

Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti is also known as Bhima Jayanti, marking the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ambedkar . Dr. famously known as Babasaheb. Ambedkar's first birthday was celebrated publicly on 14 April 1928 in Pune. Ambedkar is known as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and has received the country's highest civilian honor: the Bharat Ratna.

On Ambedkar Jayanti, people remember Dr. BR Ambedkar and his contribution to the creation of India and efforts to curb social discrimination against Dalits. Various celebrations have been organized across the country on this day.

Early life:


Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in the city and the military cantonment of Mhow in Central Province (now Madhya Pradesh). He was the fourteenth and last son of Ramji Maloji Sakpal, an army officer who held the rank of Subedar, and Bhimabai Sakpal, daughter of Lakshmana Murbadkar. 

His family is of Marathi origin from the small town of Ambadawe (Mandangad taluka) in Ratnagiri district of present-day Maharashtra.  Dr BR Ambedkar was born into a poor lower Mahar caste (Dalit) who were considered untouchables and subjected to socio-economic discrimination. His ancestors worked for the British East India Company army for a long time, and his father served in the British Indian Army at Mhow Cantonment.

Ramji Sakpal retired in 1894 and the family moved to Satara after two years. Shortly after his move, Ambedkar's mother passed away. They were looked after by children and lived in difficult circumstances. Ambedkar survived three sons, Balaram, Anandrao and Bhimrao and two daughters, Manjula and Tulsa.

Some lesser known facts about Ambedkar are as follows:


He became the President of Independent Law of India, serving as the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, where he contributed a lot with different policies and by giving every representative equal opportunity to give his opinion. He served as President for two and a half years from August 29, 1947 to January 24, 1950.

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar strongly opposed the caste system prevalent within the society before independence. He advocated equality and fraternity among all the people of the society to promote sustainable and inclusive development.

From 1954-55, Baba Saheb's health deteriorated with each passing day and he passed away on December 6, 1956 leaving behind his legacy.
