This jayanti is one of the most important festivals in the Sikh community and commemorates Guru Nanak Sahib, who was the founder of Sikhism and the first Sikh Guru.

In India, this day can also be called Guru Nanak Gurpurab, Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak or Guru Nanak Dev Hi Jayanti. It is an official holiday in many states and Indian stock, bond and money markets are closed.

Early Life of Guru Nanak


Nanak was born on April 15, 1469. His father was an accountant in Talwandi village. Initially, Nanak moved in with his sister and brother-in-law. At the age of 16, he started working with Daulat Khan Lodi. On September 24, 1487, he married Mata Sulakkani. Nanak was the founder of Sikhism. Faith, striving for social justice, honest conduct and prosperity for all were some of the fundamental principles of Sikhism. The Sikh community today worships Guru Nanak as the supreme power of his community. 974 hymns have been contributed by Guru Nanak.

Celebration activities


Numerous activities are involved with Sikhs and other Indians to honor the life and teachings of Guru Nanak.

Akhand Path: 


Before the beginning of Guru Nanak Jayanti, a series of readings are made in central places in the main Sikh regions. This event known as Akhand Path lasts for 48 hours. During the Akhand Path, some of the most important poems of the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred scripture of Sikhism, are read. At certain times, Sikhs also offer worship.

Nagarakitan: 


A day before the festival, Sikhs take part in the Nagarkitan, a vibrant procession that attracts visitors from all over the world. The procession is led by five beloved and Sikh flag. The parade also includes musicians, choreographers and martial artists. The streets where the processions take place are often decorated with various banners and flower arrangements.

Langar:


 It is  On the full moon day of Cuttack month, people watching Guru Nanak Jayanti can enjoy a free community lunch with their friends and family. After this meal, Sikhs participate in several prayer sessions at night.


Celebration for Guru Nanak Jayanti 



To show their devotion and worship their guru, many devotees (not just members of the Sikh community) visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar, which is beautifully decorated on this day. Many tourists go directly to Amritsar, especially during this time, just to experience the excitement of this festival!

Around the world, Sikh communities take out processions, sing hymns and read their holy books. For those religious members who cannot visit the gurudwara, rituals are followed in their homes. Most Sikh houses are lit and decorated with elegant lights.
